The unboxing experience

It’s what’s on the inside that counts. But a great unboxing experience is another marketing tool you can use to make your customers happy, add a personal touch, improve the overall impression and customer service. It’s all about making your online business memorable. Compared to brick and mortar stores, you have less touch points to up-sell and impress customer, which is why you need to make every moment count. Creating a branded online experience will set you apart from competitors, since a memorable experience will hopefully make your customers come back.

The why’s and how’s:

  • Getting packaging right can have a major influence on how users come to think about their product and will help you creating a stronger brand experience. Think about what stands out about your brand and/or products and make sure you incorporate that in your packaging identity as well.  Recent numbers from Dotcom show that  52% of consumers are likely to make repeat purchases from an online merchant that delivers premium packaging.
  • Personalization is also one of the important things about a great package. Make your costumer feel special. Add a personal note addressing his or her by first name, let them know how happy you are to have them as a customer. This might as well be included in the information your obligated to send out (a delivery note, return slips etc).
  • A creative package can even decrease product returns. Why? Because it’s a all about value proposition – ‘it’s worth it, you’ve bought a great product, it’s special’. Also, if you make a strong, visual impact people will definitely share the experience in reviews, Instagram posts or telling their friends. Nearly 40% would share an image in social media if it came in a unique package.

One brand that works really well with the packing is fashion/beauty brand & Other Stories. The order comes in a neat box filled with silk paper and a set of smaller envelopes: one for “the little things”, one “filled with treasures” and a simple, but efficient, “thank you note”. Sometimes they also add some much appreciated samples.
